Coal India Limited, the second largest corporate body in the world, having about 4.43 (as on 31.Dec. '06) lakh employees with headquarters in Kolkata, is a holding Company under the Ministry of Coal, Government of India. It was formed as a public sector undertaking in November, 1975 for reorganizing the nationalized coal mines and insuring integrated development of coal, the prime source of energy.Coal India presently contributes around 85% of the total coal production in India. It operates through 8 subsidiaries - Seven producing companies and one Planning & Design Institute.

The mines of North Eastern Coalfields ( Assam & Meghalaya ) operate directly under Coal India. Coal India currently operates 465 mines and 19 washeries ( 12 coking coal & 7 non-coking coal) spread over 8 states of India to produce and beneficiate coal for meeting the demand of the consumers all over the country.The range of Products are : Raw Coal ( coking & non-coking ), Washed Coal, Middlings, Soft Coke & Hard Coke, Coal Tar, Coal Gas, Coal Chemicals etc.
