03 Jul 2023

A second ship carrying coal for the Payra Thermal Power Plant arrived at Payra Port in Patuakhali early Sunday.

The vessel ‘MB Pavo Brave’ with 36,570 tons of coal for the Payra Thermal Power departed from Indonesia's Balikpapan port a week ago docked at Payra port early Sunday.

Golam Rabbani, a pilot at Payra port, brought the ship to the inner anchorage around 10:30am from the outer anchorage.

Payra Port Traffic Division Deputy Director Azizur Rahman acknowledging the matter and said it is the second ship that arrived at the port a month after the power plant had to suspend production due to a coal shortage.

Georges Talukder, executive engineer of the Payra Thermal Power Plant, said the coal will be unloaded through lighter vessels. Later, the ship will be taken to the Payra Thermal Power Plant jetty and the rest of the coal will be unloaded, he added.

He claimed that at least 15 more ships carrying coal are set to arrive to tackle the ongoing fuel crisis at the plant.

The power plant resumed its production on June 25 after a vessel named MV Athena, carrying 41,207 tons of coal, arrived at the port on June 22.
