500MW unit of Vallur thermal plant down due to lack of coal

The second unit of the Vallur thermal plant has been shut down due to lack of coal. The unit was producing around 500MW when it was shut down a few days ago. With the temperature increasing, the shutting down of the newly-commissioned project could lead to power cuts during week days. Currently, the shortfall is being managed as the weekend demand is less, said TNEB sources.
"The delay in arrival of coal from the Mahanadhi Coal Fields has resulted in fuel shortage for the second unit. The first unit is functioning normally," said an official from the Vallur unit, which is a joint venture of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and NTPC.
This is not the first time that one of the two Vallur units has been shut down due to shortage of fuel. On December 22, the units were shut down due to fuel shortage. "We are sourcing coal from local sources and also getting coal from Indonesia. The unit 2 is expected to re-start by Sunday," said the official.
