Adani Port & SEZ to expand transshipment terminal
07 Jan 2016
Adani Ports & SEZ Ltd, which operates Mundra Port on the west coast of India, will expand one of its existing terminals, Adani International Container Terminal Pvt Ltd (AICTPL), to make it a transshipment hub, media reports said.
The report, quoting a company official, said the reason behind developing the transshipment hub is to cater to markets in India, West Asia and South Asia.
AICTPL is a 50:50 JV with Terminal Investment Ltd, an arm of Swiss-based Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), S.A., the second largest shipping liner in the world.
The construction work has been started and it is expected to be operational in the next 15 months.
Karan Adani, CEO, APSEZ, said, “Once the hub is completed, AICTPL will become the largest container terminal in India with a cargo handling capacity of 3.1 million TEUs and total quay length of 1,460 metres.”
Apart from this, it would be capable of handling 18,000 TEU container vessels and will be equipped with 15 super post-Panamax quay cranes that would provide a cost-effective solution for port users and also address the problem of traffic congestion.
