April 9: The prolonged delay in the Adriyala underground coal project in the Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh impacted coal production of Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) in 2013-14, a company source said.
“As per the original plan, the Adriyala project was expected to be commissioned by the end of 2012. However, due to various reasons, it could not be started in 2013. This affected our production performance during the last fiscal,” the source said.
Coal production from the 49 mines of SCCL during 2013-14 fell 5.11% to 50.47 million tons (mt) compared to 53.19 mt in 2012-13. With this, the company’s coal production was the lowest since 2009-10.
The Adriyala project will adopt underground shaft mining technology to flush out coal and will be the country’s largest longwall installation. The project is aimed at extracting around 2.8 million tons of coal per annum.
