Alberta is being urged to end its addiction to coal power

22 Jan 2014

Premier Alison Redford is being given some free advice that will save lives and money, while reducing the province’s immense carbon footprint.

The Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment tells 660News, Alberta should follow Ontario’s lead and pull the plug on coal fired power generation.

Gideon Forman says the burning of coal has been linked to 100 deaths a year in the province, with another 4-thousand people a year made sick from the fumes, with the cost to health care pegged at $300 million.

Forman says Alberta should use natural gas as the transition fuel to a greener future, with wind and solar projects eventually filling the hole created by the elimination of coal.

Alberta burns more coal than all the other provinces put together.

In 2011, coal combustion pumped over 40,000,000 tones of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, which is equal to levels coming out of the oilsands.

A recent poll found 70 per cent of Albertans support the elimination of coal fired power generation.
