Anglo American sees 13% fall in Q1 thermal coal output

Anglo American plc, a globally diversified mining business, has reported a 13% drop in its export thermal coal production to 7.7 million tons (mt) in the first quarter (Q1) of 2016, compared to 8.7 mt achieved in the same quarter last year.
Export metallurgical coal production, which is mined from its Australian mines, dropped by 9% to 4.5 mt in Q1 2016, against 5 mt achieved in Q1 2015, according to data released by the company.
Australian export thermal coal production decreased by 26% to 1.1 mt, while the same in South Africa declined by 8% to 4 mt.
In Colombia, Cerrejón's production decreased by 12% to 2.6 mt, due to planned production cuts to take out the highest cost capacity in response to market conditions.
The full year production guidance remains unchanged at 21-22 mt for export metallurgical coal and 28-30 mt for export thermal coal from South Africa and Colombia, the company said.
