Anthracite coal imports up 118% in 2013-14
03 Jul 2014
July 3: India’s import of anthracite coal for the year 2013-14 through 30 major and non-major ports rose 118% to 1,437,409 tons compared to 659,154 tons in 2012-13, according to data available with ICMW.
Higher imports by Ferro Alloy makers despite a depressed market conditions was believed to be the reason for spurt in anthracite coal import in 2013-14, industry sources said.
According to data compiled by ICMW, import of anthracite coal during the first two months of 2014-15 was 107,946 tons down marginally from 143,208 tons imported during the corresponding period of 2013-14.
However, there exists an overall positive sentiment after a new government came to power in the country in May raising expectation that steel demand would surge in India that would lead to higher demand for Ferro Alloys and consequently higher requirement for anthracite coal.
