Apr-Dec cargo traffic handling by major ports up 3%

The cargo traffic handling by India’s 12 major ports during the first nine months of 2014-15 rose 3.18% to 447.05 million tons from 443.26 mt during the same period previous fiscal, according to official data.
The 12 major ports - Mumbai, JNPT, Marmugao, Kandla, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Ennore, VO Chidambarnar, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia) - handle about 61% of the country's total cargo traffic.
Kandla Port held the top position in terms of cargo handling as it handled 73.87 mt of cargo during the period, up 4.26% compared to 70.85 mt in the same period last year.
Paradip Port held second position and handled 55.13 mt, compared to 52.39 mt during April to December 2014.
In terms of growth, Mormugao port reported the highest growth of 35.31% during the period followed by VO Chidambaranar port with 19.30% growth.
During the nine month period, JNPT handled 48.23 mt of cargo, while Mumbai port handled 46.39 mt. Vishakhapatnam port handled 42.24 mt, Chennai port 37.41 mt, Kolkata port 37.30 mt, New Mangalore port 25.29 mt, VO Chidambaranar 27.80 mt, Kamarajar (Ennore) 22.96 mt, Cochin 16.49 mt and Mormugao 13.89 mt.
