July 17: The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), the apex body of miners in Australia, on July 16 said it was willing to offer its expertise in sustainable mining to the Indian mining sector.
“Australian companies have developed the expertise on sustainable mining for several years. Given the environmental and rehabilitation issues gaining importance in India as well, we are ready to offer the needed expertise to Indian mining firms,” Melanie Stutsel, Director (Health, Safety, Environment and Community Policy), MCA, said.
She said that Australia could also offer help in protecting the key environmental values with the help of social NGOs and assist in capacity building to ensure an enabling regulatory framework that will help boost mining activity in India.
Stutsel, who is currently on a visit to India as the 2014 Australia-India Council Environmental Speaker, has met various Indian NGOs and industry bodies such as TERI, OXFAM and FEMI, she said.
