BHEL bags Rs 3,500-cr NTPC team generator order

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has won an order worth of Rs 3,500 crore for supply of two 800-MW steam generators with super-critical parameters, outbidding competitors in an open global tender, according to a BHEL release.
The contract has been placed on BHEL by NTPC for setting up 2x800-MW steam generator island package at the Telangana Super Thermal Power Project (TnSTPP), which is located within NTPC’s existing Ramagundam Power Station in the Karimnagar district of Telangana.
According to the BHEL press release, the key equipment for the contract would be manufactured at BHEL’s unit in Tiruchi, Ranipet, Hyderabad, Jhansi and Bengaluru and the company's power division would be responsible for civil works and erection and commissioning of the equipment.
It is assumed that the power generated from this plant will contribute substantially towards meeting the demand for power in a move aimed at providing an impetus to the development of the state.
The press release further noted that BHEL, along with NTPC and IGCAR, has formed a national consortium for indigenous development and commissioning of an 800-MW advanced ultra-super critical (AUSC) power plant in India under the National Mission on Clean Coal (Carbon) Technologies.
BHEL has a long-standing partnership with NTPC and has supplied over 30,000 MW of the coal-based power plants of NTPC and its joint ventures that account for around 80% of the power utility’s coal-based installed capacity.
This also includes 2 super-critical units of 660 MW each, which have been commissioned at Barh. In addition, close to 8,000 MW sets from NTPC and its JVs are under various stages of execution by BHEL, including 14 super-critical steam generators and 7 super-critical steam turbine generators.
As per the release, being the market leader in the power equipment manufacturing sector, BHEL has so far contracted 46 supercritical steam generators and 39 supercritical steam turbine generators – the highest in the country by any.
Notably, during the current fiscal itself, BHEL has been entrusted with orders for 10 super-critical steam generators and 8 super-critical steam turbine generators by various utilities. Out of the super-critical sets contracted so far, 6 steam generators and 4 steam turbine generators have already achieved capacity addition.
