BIS Will Inspect Coal Thermal Power Plants
06 Jul 2015
The High Court on Friday directed the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to inspect the three coal-fired thermal power plants in the state and submit a report.
The Court has registered a suo motu public interest petition based on the directions of the Supreme Court which ordered high courts across the country to examine whether coal-fired thermal power plants were complying with the safety standards and rules and regulations relating to the health of the employees.
A division bench of officiating Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee and Justice B V Nagarathna said, “If any deficiency is found, BIS will suggest remedial measures. After the remedial measures are taken, BIS shall hold further inspection of all three power plants. They shall submit a final report to this court... Call this matter after six months.”
Govt Schemes for Farmers
The High Court on Friday issued notices to the state and the Union governments on a petition seeking directions to mitigate farmer-related issues.
Karnataka State Legal Services Authority had filed public interest litigation in this regard.
The petitioner also sought directions to the government to submit a report on implementation of schemes like ‘Suvarna Bhoomi Yojana’ and three crop insurance schemes including National Agriculture Insurance Scheme.
The bench asked the state to report on the status of the schemes launched for farmers. Referring to the recent farmer suicides, the bench observed that the schemes would be useful only if the benefits reach the farmer when he needed it the most.
