BNSF, Union Pacific and CSX post higher weekly coal carloads year-over-year

11 Apr 2014

The number of coal carloads originated by US railroads for the week ending April 5 totaled 115,945, down 0.5% from the prior week but up 4.2% from the same week last year, the Association of American Railroads said Thursday.

The year-over-year increase in coal shipments comes as demand from utility customers remains strong, partly due to the ongoing network congestion issues that started in the fall and were exacerbated by the abnormally cold winter.

BNSF Railway, CSX and Union Pacific all posted higher year-over-year weekly coal carloads, as those railroads play catchup with some utility customers, particularly those that burn Powder River Basin coal.

For the year thus far, coal carloads originated on US railroads totaled 1,538,560, down 0.3% compared with the same period last year, the AAR said. The year-to-date total is down 7.5% compared with 2012.

The Canadian railroads, including the US operations of Canadian National and Canadian Pacific, originated 8,606 coal carloads during the week, down 13% from the prior week and down 10.9% from the year-ago week, according to the AAR.

For the year, coal carloads originated by the Canadian railroads total 121,535, down 5% from last year.

US coal production during the week ending April 5 totaled 19.1 million st, according to estimates released Thursday by the US Energy Information Administration. The estimate was down 3.9% from last week but up 1.5% from the year-ago week.

For the week ending April 5, the four largest US railroads reported handling (which includes originations and interchange) the following weekly coal and coke carloads:

BNSF Railway reported 43,809 weekly coal carloads, down 1.3% from the prior week but up 6.1% from the year-ago week. For the year to date, the railroad's coal carloads totaled 611,987, up 3.6% compared with 2013.

Union Pacific reported 31,355 weekly coal carloads, down 0.3% from the prior week but up 1.9% from last year. Year-to-date coal carloads totaled 460,564, up 7% from last year.

CSX reported 25,090 weekly coal carloads, which while down 7.9% from the prior week, is the second-highest amount on the railroad this year, following the prior week, when the railroad posted its highest weekly amount since December 2011.

On a year-over-year basis, the railroad's coal carloads for the week ending April 5 were up 15.1%. For the year to date, coal carloads totaled 298,077, up 0.4%, which marks the first time this year the railroad has posted positive comparisons to last year.

Norfolk Southern reported 25,572 weekly coal carloads, down 1.4% from the prior week and down 4.2% from 2013. For the year to date, coal carloads totaled 315,025, down 13.2% from last year.
