Bill Aimed at Closing Coal Ash Pits Advanced Out of Committee
18 Jun 2014
State senators advanced a proposal out of committee aimed at cleaning up coal ash in North Carolina.
The bill sets an aggressive schedule for Duke Energy to close and de-water its four most potential harmful sites within the next five years and take action with all of its remaining sites within the next 15 years.
The Senate Agriculture Committee voted to advance the bill with the deadlines in place.
Duke Energy said it understands why state leaders set the timeline, but asked them to consider holding off on the deadlines until they can determine if they are feasible.
"Until we know the rankings of the sites and the closure plan at those sites. It is very hard for us to assess our ability to meet the schedule. It seems like we have the process a little out of order,” said George Everett, with Duke Energy.
The bill now goes to two more committees before being considered by the full Senate next week.
