10 Feb 2015
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told the Supreme Court on Monday that their preliminary probe into the irregular coal field allocations of over 200 mines was nearly complete. Lawyer Amrendra Sharan told the court that preliminary enquiries in relation to 168 blocks were almost complete. Submitting its status report for the investigation till 5 February, the CBI asked for an officer to replace joint director O.P. Galhotra, who had recused himself from the probe. The apex court approved the same. The name of the officer was not disclosed in open court on Monday. The apex court is monitoring the CBI and Enforcement Directorate investigation into the irregular coal block allocations. A specially constituted bench of justices Madan B. Lokur, Kurian Joseph and A.K. Sikri hear the case. Taking time to peruse the status report filed by the CBI in relation to the investigations into the irregular allocations of coal blocks, the court said that it would hear the case on 23 February next. In relation to certain missing documents for some coal blocks, the CBI wanted to file a closure report, which the court will consider at the next hearing.
