CIL Oct despatches to power sector up 14% m-o-m

23 Nov 2015

India Coal Market Watch

November 20: Despatches of coal by Coal India Ltd (CIL) to the power sector during the month of October increased by 13.63% to 34.50 million tons (mt) from 30.37 mt in September, according to data available with ICMW.

On a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis, the despatches were up 6.19% from 32.49 mt in October 2014, the data revealed.

Higher production and availability of rakes helped the company despatch an increased quantity of coal to not only the power sector, but to the steel sector as well, during the month.

The despatches of 0.68 mt to the steel and cokeries sector in October were up 13.14% on a month-on-month (m-o-m) basis and by 16.24% year-on-year (y-o-y).

However, despatches to the cement sector slipped by 10% to 0.37 mt m-o-m and by 14.49% y-o-y though despatches to the fertiliser sector increased by 6.92% to 0.14 mt m-o-m, but slipped by 30% y-o-y.

On the other hand, despatches to the “others” sector (mainly through e-auction), fell marginally to 8.69 mt m-o-m, but jumped by 62% y-o-y from 5.39 mt in October 2014.

During the first seven months of 2015-16, the company’s despatches to the power sector stood higher by 7.18% at 224.63 mt from 209.58 mt during the corresponding period of the previous year.

Despatches to steel and cokeries sector during the seven months of the current financial year rose by 4.26% to 4.38 mt from 4.20 mt last year while that to the fertiliser sector rose by 2.60% to 1.28 mt from 1.25 mt last year.

Similarly, despatches to the “others’ sector were up by 22.70% at 62.34 mt from 50.81 last year mt largely due to increase in e-auction quantities.

However, despatches to the cement sector between April-October were down by 4.26% at 2.94 mt from 3.08 mt last year.
