CIL examining draft report on mine modernisation: MoC

July 22: State-owned Coal India Limited is examining the draft report submitted by KPMG Advisory Services Private Limited regarding technology development and modernisation of the company, Piyush Goyal, Minister of State for Power, Coal & New and Renewable Energy (Independent Charge, said on July 21.
Earlier, 14 international consultancy companies and organisations participated in an expression of interest (EoI) floated by CIL for technology development and modernisation of mines of CIL.
“The use of improved technology is an ongoing process and there is scope for improvement in the mechanisation of underground mining methods of extraction in the mines of Coal India Limited (CIL),” said an official statement from the Ministry of Coal (MoC).
Explaining the methods of coal mining, the official statement said that for mining coal reserves at depth the best suited method is underground mining.
“In opencast mining, coal is extracted either by dragline and shovel dumper combination or shovel dumper surface miner combination while in the underground method, coal is extracted by continuous miner or blasting and loading by load haul dumpers or side discharge loaders,” the release said.
