CIL may miss FY15 supply target to power sector

21 Aug 2014

August 21: Coal India Ltd (CIL) may miss its annual target of supplying 440 million tons (mt) of coal to the power sector in 2014-15 by a huge margin as it is lagging behind its benchmarks till date, according to an estimate by ICMW

CIL had supplied 354 mt coal to the power sector in 2013-14 against the targeted 376 mt and increased the supply target to the sector for 2014-15 to 440 mt.

The company is currently lagging slightly behind its production and off-take targets for the period April-July, 2014-15 even as overall supplies to the power sector was up by nearly 2.4%, an official from the company told ICMW.
During April-July, 2014-15, production and off-take by the world’s largest coal miner stood at 141.34 mt and 157.59 mt -- up 4.20% and 2.68% respectively over the corresponding period of 2013-14.

Its production and off-take targets for April-July of the current financial year were 148.81 mt and 171.43 mt respectively. For the current financial year, the company has set a production target of 507 mt while the offtake target is at 520 mt.

Considering the past performance of CIL, especially in 2013-14 when it had achieved only a marginal increase of 12 mt in supplies to the power sector compared to 2012-13, ICMW understands that CIL, at best, may end up supplying around 380-400 mt coal to this critical segment.

That too would be possible only if the existing thrust of the coal and power minister, Piyush Goyal, to keep CIL under pressure for supplying more coal to the power sector, continues.
