July 17: Coal India Ltd (CIL) is likely to abandon or stop production in a total of 31 mines across various subsidiaries during the next five years due to either exhaustion of feasible reserves or safety reasons, an official from the company said.
“Every year, some mines are closed/abandoned/discontinued due to exhaustion of reserves, safety and economic viability. To compensate this loss and augment production, new projects are opened and capacity of ongoing projects is enhanced wherever feasible,” the official said.
Of the total 31 mines earmarked for closure, 4 are in ECL, 1 in MCL, 2 in WCL, 5 in CCL and 19 in SECL’s areas, the official added.
Of the total 31 mines likely to be abandoned, 13 are underground (UG) mines and the rest of the 18 are open cast mines (OCP), the official said.
