June 18: The overall coal production of Coal India Ltd (CIL) is likely to be affected in June to ‘some extent’ due to excessive summer heat in most of the mining areas, an official of the company said.
“The production is likely to affected to great extent in Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) due to restriction on working hours imposed by Odisha government and this might impact overall production of CIL during the month to some extent,” the official said.
“MCL’s production had been growing at a steady pace and it had, to some extent, managed to mitigate the impact of fall in production at other subsidiaries,” the official added.
In fact, the Odisha government, through an official order, had stopped any mining activity from 1100 hours to 1600 hours in the entire state in view of heat wave prevailing in the state.
“The order to stop work between 1100 hours and 1600 hours had come a few years back after a few workers had died due to heat wave. There is in-fact no major impact of heat in mining areas as almost all the dumpers and dozers of MCL are fitted with air conditioners, but still we have to obey the government’s order,” the official said.
