CIL’s coal despatches to power sector rise in Jan

29 Feb 2016

The despatches of coal by Coal India Ltd (CIL) to the power sector in January 2016 increased by 1.04% to 37.82 million tons (mt) from 37.43 mt in December 2015, according to data available with ICMW.

On a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis, despatches to the power sector were up 8.80% from 34.76 mt in January 2015, the data revealed.

Though higher production and availability of rakes helped the company despatch an increased quantity of coal to the power sector, that upbeat picture was missing in steel and fertiliser, during the month.

The despatches in January 2016, of 0.67 mt, to steel units and cokeries were down 4.29% m-o-m as those in December 2015 had stood at 0.70 mt, while on a y-o-y basis, the despatches were up 4.69% compared to 0.64 mt despatched in January 2015.

Despatches to the cement sector at 0.36 mt, remained same as in December. However, on a y-o-y basis, despatches to the cement sector were down 25% compared to 0.48 mt in January 2015.

As far as the fertiliser sector is concerned, despatches in January 2016 stood at 0.12 mt, down 36.84% compared with only 0.19 mt in January 2015. On a m-o-m basis, despatches to the sector were down 58.62% compared to only 0.29 mt despatched in December 2015.

On the other hand, despatches to the “other” sector (mainly through e-auction) were down by 0.32% to 9.32 mt from 9.35 mt in December 2015 and up 16.79% y-o-y from 7.98 mt in January 2015.

During the 10 months (April-January) of 2015-16, the company’s despatches to the power sector stood higher by 6.62% at 335.99 mt as compared to 315.14 mt despatched during the corresponding period of the previous year.

The despatches to steel and cokeries during the first 10 months of the current financial year rose 18.04% to 6.61 mt from 5.6 mt last year while that to the fertiliser sector rose by 8.79% to 1.98 mt from 1.82 mt despatched during the corresponding period of the previous year.

Similarly, despatches to the “others” sector during the first 10 months of 2015-16 were up 24.40% at 88.66 mt from 71.27 mt last year largely due to increase in the e-auction quantity.

However, despatches to the cement sector between April and January were down 9.57% at 4.06 mt from 4.49 mt last year.
