CPPs stalling generation for want of coal

November 7: The cut in the e-auction quantity has hit the captive power plants (CPPs) hard with a number of them stopping generation due to scarcity of the fuel, a spokesperson of the Indian Captive Power Producers’ Association (ICPPA) told ICMW.
“We are getting reports of plants shutting down for want of coal,” he said.
“In the recent auctions, we noticed that the quantity offered by Coal India subsidiaries has gone down to just one-third of the earlier lots. The cut in volume has resulted in a massive surge in prices and dramatically increased the fuel cost for CPPs,” he said.
“In some cases, CPPs are not being allowed to bid for coal from well-connected and nearby mines,” he alleged.
