Cement sector’s power needs to grow 53% by 2020

November 13: Power consumption by cement manufacturing units in India is expected to grow by more than 53% over the next five years, according to an estimate by Cement Manufacturers Association (CMA).
Total requirement for power may go up to 8,300 MW by 2019-20 from 5,400 MW in 2014-15, CMA data shows.
The estimate is based on the average requirement of 20 MW power for one million tons (mt) of cement production.
During the period under consideration, India’s cement production is expected to increase to 415 mt from 270.22 mt.
Over the same period, coal consumption is expected to go up to 108 mt by 2019-20 from around 63 mt last year.
