30 Mar 2016
Coking coal imports through the port of Chennai dropped by 65.45% to 38 tons month-on-month in February 2016 against 110 tons in January 2016, as per provisional information available with ICMW.
But, once again, the fall was against a very low figure.
In February 2016, a single consignment arrived from the UK at a unit price of Rs 29,186 ($423) per ton.
In January 2016, all consignments arrived from the UK at price range of Rs 29,908 – Rs 30,189 ($458-453) per ton.
It may be noted that coal handling at Chennai Port has been suspended since October 2012 following a ban imposed by the Madras High Court on handling of dirty cargo of coal and iron ore at the port with effect from October 1, 2011. The court order came following the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL). However, old stocks are getting cleared.
