Coking coal imports through the port of Chennai rose 150% to 190 tons month-on-month in December 2015 against a mere 76 tons in November, although on an abysmally low base, as per provisional information available with ICMW.
In December 2015, 188 tons arrived from the UK at a price range of Rs 29,702 – Rs 30,115 ($442-451) per ton while 2 tons arrived from Australia whose price details are not available.
In November 2015, all consignments arrived from the UK at price range of Rs 29,908 – Rs 30,189 ($458-453) per ton.
It may be noted that coal handling at Chennai Port has been suspended since October 2012 following a ban imposed by the Madras High Court on handling of dirty cargo of coal and iron ore at the port with effect from October 1, 2011. The court order came following the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL). However, old stocks are getting cleared.
