Pet coke imports through Chennai Port were at a volume of 695 tons in December 2015 while in November these were at 254 tons, showing a spurt of 174% month-on-month, as per provisional information available with ICMW.
Imports of the material in December 2014, however, had stood at 105 tons.
Total imports of the material in the first nine months (April-December) of 2015-16 stood at 4,383 tons against 3,235 tons recorded in the same period of the previous fiscal.
Imports of pet coke through the port in financial year 2014-15 stood at 3,827 tons.

In December 2015, imports comprised 598 tons from China in a range of Rs 21,735 – Rs 45,793 per ton ($323-681) per to, 72 tons from Germany at a price band of Rs 40,525 – Rs 45,037 ($603-$670), 18 tons from Japan at a range of Rs 20,362 - 291,363/ton ($303-4,333) and 8 tons from the UK at a unit price of Rs 53,728 ($799).
November imports comprised 153.68 tons from China in a range of Rs 21,530 – Rs 46,498 per ton ($323-697), 48 tons from Germany at a price band of Rs 42,590 - 46,392 ($652-710)/ton, 35 tons from Sweden at Rs 73,264 - 74,777/ton ($1,121) and 17 tons from Japan at a price range of Rs 20,210 – 293,399 ($303-4,432).
Coal handling at Chennai Port has been suspended since October 2012 following a ban imposed by the Madras High Court on handling of dirty cargo of coal and iron ore at the port with effect from October 1, 2011. The court order came following the hearing of public interest litigation (PIL). However, old stocks are getting cleared.
