Chennai’s Jan coking coal imports drop 42% m-o-m
19 Feb 2016
Coking coal imports through the port of Chennai dropped 42.10% to 110 tons month-on-month in January 2016 against 190 tons in December 2015, as per provisional information available with ICMW.
But, once again, the fall was against a very low figure.
In January 2016, all consignments arrived from the UK at price range of Rs 29,908 – Rs 30,189 ($458-453) per ton.
In December 2015, 188 tons arrived from the UK at a unit price of Rs 29,186 ($433) per ton.
It may be noted that coal handling at Chennai Port has been suspended since October 2012 following a ban imposed by the Madras High Court on handling of dirty cargo of coal and iron ore at the port with effect from October 1, 2011. The court order came following the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL). However, old stocks are getting cleared.
