29 Apr 2015
April 29: Coking coal imports through the port of Chennai more than doubled, though on a low base, to 323 tons in March 2015 against 154 tons in February 2015, as per provisional information available with ICMW.
In March, all the consignments arrived from the UK at a price range of Rs 27,785 - Rs 28,522 ($441-454) per ton.
In February 2015, however, 152 tons had arrived from the UK at price range of Rs 28,080 – 28,522 ($450-454) per ton and 2 tons from New Zealand at a unit price of Rs 28,939 ($463).
It may be noted that coal handling at Chennai Port has been suspended since October 2012 following a ban imposed by the Madras High Court on handling of dirty cargo of coal and iron ore at the port with effect from October 1, 2011. The court order came following the hearing of public interest litigation (PIL). However, old stocks are getting cleared.
