Chennai’s Oct coking coal imports drop to mere 38t

 November 24: Coking coal imports through the port of Chennai dropped to a mere 38 tons in October 2015 against 209 tons in September, as per provisional information available with ICMW, albeit on a low base.

In October 2015, 38 tons arrived from the UK at a unit price of Rs 29,614 ($448) per ton while 0.4 tons arrived from Australia at Rs 4,884 ($75)/ton.

 In September 2015, all consignments had arrived from the UK at price range of Rs 30,262 – Rs 30,484 ($453-464) per ton.

It may be noted that coal handling at Chennai Port has been suspended since October 2012 following a ban imposed by the Madras High Court on handling of dirty cargo of coal and iron ore at the port with effect from October 1, 2011. The court order came following the hearing of public interest litigation (PIL). However, old stocks are getting cleared.
