January 27: China’s coal production in 2014 fell by around 2.5%, which was a first year-on-year decline since 2000, media reports said, quoting Jiang Zhimin, an official of China National Coal Association.
The decline was attributed to low domestic demand, increase in imports due to a soft trend in international coal prices, the report said, but did not provide the figures for 2014.
The country’s coal production during the first 11 of 2014 stood at 3.52 billion tons, down 2.1% year-on-year.
The report, however, mentioned that Inner Mongolia’s production during the year was down 11.9% at 908.08 mt, while Shanxi and Shaanxi regions reported production of 976.70 mt and 510.90 mt, up 1.5% and 3.6% respectively over 2013.
