China’s long-awaited market opens with a whimper, not a bang
19 Jul 2021
China’s new carbon market, instantly the world’s largest, opened last Friday. It will, however, be years before the pricing of carbon by the world’s largest polluter has an impact, if any.
The market was launched in Shanghai after a decade of planning, trials and aborted starts which saw its coverage reduced from what was originally envisaged – coverage of most of China’s most carbon-intensive industries – to a scheme that covers only the country’s power generation sector.
