CIL intends to raise production in abandoned underground mines with increased mechanization and acquiring mines abroad to increase output
Coal India Ltd envisages a production of 615 million tonnes (mt) of coal by 2016-17 “in an optimistic scenario”, as against 462.42mt produced in 2013-14, company’s chairman A.K. Dubey said in his speech at the annual general meeting on Wednesday. “We have adopted a workable approach.
There are 148 ongoing projects during the current plan period with a production potential of about 484mtpa (million tonnes per annum). 126 future projects with a total envisaged production capacity of about 441mtpa are expected to contribute 88mt by the terminal year 2016,” said Dubey. “Hopefully, our endeavours to ease the bottlenecks, that have impeded the growth momentum in the past, would fructify in the future years,” said Dubey, who is also the additional secretary in the ministry of coal. Among the steps is the plan to raise production in abandoned underground mines with increased mechanization and acquiring mines abroad, he said.
Coal India is the world’s largest coal mining company but is struggling to keep pace with India’s rising demand for the mineral, leading to growing imports from the global markets. Separately, Dubey told reporters that a few of its independent directors had resigned for personal reasons.
