December 11: A trade union wing of Coal India Ltd (CIL) workers has announced a day-long strike on January 13, 2015 in protest against the government’s move to “denationalise” the coal industry.
The CITU-backed All India Coal Workers’ Federation (AICWF) has also started barricading coal mines from December 11 and would continue with the agitation till December 16, union general secretary Jibon Roy said.
“Around 110,000 mine workers have participated in the demonstrations, road blockades and barricades in around 750 mining pits across the country. The programme will continue till December 16,” he said.
He also called other CIL unions to rejoin the protest rallies and the proposed strike in January. Earlier, four CIL unions had announced to hold a strike on November 24 but had withdrawn the same following differences over holding talks with the coal ministry.
