Coal capital vows turnaround
08 Aug 2016
Having supervised a five-day long clean-up operation, Dhanbad's mayor today made out a strong case for turning around Dhanbad's civic nightmare, impressing upon Union urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu that he, with the support of the local corporation, would spare no effort to ensure that the coal capital would improve its ranking in the next Swachh Bharat Abhiyan review.
Dhanbad, ranked last in the last swatch survey of 73 cities with a population of over 15 lakh, was to have highlighted both its challenges and achievements in the cleaning mission to the Prime Minister over video conferencing. But today, Union minister Naidu along with urban development secretary Rajiv Gauba were all ears as mayor Chandrashekhar Agarwal held forth.
"We have not matched the expectations of the people, but at the same time, people should also come forward to cooperate with us to make this city clean. This is what I told the honourable minister without hiding the truth," Agarwal told The Telegraph after the 5-minute video conference that began at 11.27am. All 55 ward councillors also witnessed the proceedings.
After hearing from the mayor and deputy commissioner Anjaneyulu Dodde, Naidu is understood to have told them to involve BCCL in their work. "Dhanbad Municipal Corporation (DMC) should take help of Bharat Coking Coal which has a major role to play in keeping the coal capital clean," the Union minister said.
Mayor Agarwal said they all welcomed the minister's suggestion.
