Coal company pays back taxes to Wyoming County
09 Mar 2015
A coal company has paid more than $1 million in back taxes owed to Wyoming County.
County prosecutor Mike Cochrane tells The Register-Herald that Bluestone Coal owed the taxes for 2012 and 2013. He says he hopes a recent change in ownership will eliminate future problems with collecting taxes from the company.
Cochrane says county officials had to take legal actions against Bluestone Coal's former owner, Mechel, to collect delinquent taxes.
Billionaire Jim Justice completed a $5 million acquisition of the company from Mechel in February. He had sold Bluestone to the Russian mining and metals company in 2009.
Wyoming County Sheriff Randall Aliff says Justice has assured county officials that the company's taxes will be paid.
