Coal consumers must set up own washeries: Saxena

April 17: Even as Coal India is taking initiatives to come up with a number of coal washeries, coal consumers in the country should come forward to invest in such projects to increase the overall washing capacity, CIL Director (Marketing) B K Saxena said.
“I think the end-users should also come forward and invest in washery projects,” he said at the International Conference on Coal Washing in India in Delhi.
He said the companies owing captive mines should not solely depend on the state-owned miner to wash coal produced from their block. “Why should captive block-owners look up to CIL for washing their coal? Ideally they should have their own unit,” he said.
CIL, on its part, is planning bigger project of 20-30 million tons per annum for the future, Saxena said, adding that states are being taken to expedite the planned unit which are facing delays due to various constraints.
