Coal drop drives slowdown in emissions but Paris goals long way off

04 Dec 2019

The growth of emissions of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels most likely eased this year to a third of the previous year's pace but that may be temporary and short of the drop needed to achieve the Paris climate goals. The Global Carbon Project, which includes CSIRO research, estimates carbon emissions from burning coal, oil and gas will amount to 36.8 billon tonnes of carbon dioxide, up 0.6 per cent from 2018. For the 2010-18 period, such emissions rose by an annual average of 0.9 per cent."Every single additional year of emissions growth makes it significantly harder to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement," Pep Canadell, the project's executive director and a CSIRO scientist, said.Emissions from burning coal will most likely drop by 0.9 per cent this year, based on preliminary estimates, continuing a trend that began in 2013. The decline was offset by this year's 0.9 per cent rise in emissions from oil and a 2.6 per cent jump from natural gas.
