Coal exports strong despite mass job losses

21 Jul 2014

Coal exports out of Port of Newcastle this year remain strong, despite mine closures and hundreds of job losses across the Hunter.

Figures by Port Waratah Coal Services for the first six months of the year show exports have improved slightly compared to the same period last year.

That is despite the whole industry being in freefall.

So far there has only been a four percent drop in coal exports, compared to six percent last year.

That is in line with the industry's target which is always set higher than it expects.

It is understood exports are similar at the Port's other operator the Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group which does not release its figures.

The ABC's been told export tonnages will probably remain steady, but the industry has put the brakes on future growth plans.

Even if PWCS gets approval for its T4 project, it is not expected to proceed anytime soon.
