Coal handling by major ports up 6.71% y-o-y in April

May 16: Coal handling by major ports in India increased 6.71% to 9.22 million tons (mt) compared to 8.64 mt in April 2013, according to data released by the Indian Ports Association (IPA).
Of the total coal handling during the month under review, steam coal handling in major ports increased nearly 14% to 6.37 mt compared to 5.59 mt in April 2013 while coking coal handling during April, 2014, dropped 6.50% to 2.85 mt compared to 3.04 mt in April 2013.
Among the major ports, Paradip Port handled the maximum volume of coal during the month which stood at 3.00 mt, up 12.04% from 2.68 mt handled in the same month of the previous year (April 2013). Paradip Port is followed by Kamarajar Port (formerly, Ennore Port) in handling the maximum volume at nearly 2 mt coal during the month compared to 1.67 mt in the same period of last year, registering a growth of 19.76%.
Mumbai Port registered the highest growth at 68.57% in coal handling in April 2014 at 0.59 mt compared to 0.35 mt handled in the same month last year.
