Coal imports cost India $33 bn in three years

February 11: India has imported around 317.6 million tons (mt) of coal at a cost of Rs 2,07,233 crore in the last three financial years (FY’11, FY’12, FY’13), according to data released by the Ministry of Coal (MoC).

At the current rupee value of 62.4 versus the dollar, the total forex outgo on coal imports during the period stands at around $33.2 billion.

In terms of quantity, the highest import of 173.6 mt (at a cost of Rs 72,291 crore) came from Indonesia, while in terms of import value, Australia topped the chart with Rs 85,342 crore (for 74.2 mt).

Imports from South Africa stood at 43.7 mt (at a cost of Rs 24,795 crore), from the USA at 11.2 mt (Rs 11,461 crore), New Zealand at 2.8 mt (Rs 3,204 crore) and others at 12.12 mt (Rs 10,140 crore), the data showed.
