Coal imports via Mundra Port down for 2 consecutive weeks

30 Dec 2013

December 30: Lesser demand from the power and steel sectors resulted in a sharp fall in coal imports via Mundra Port in the last two weeks of the month, a senior official told ICMW.

"Traders are not keen on importing coal as there is hardly any demand from the thermal power and steel sectors. Hence, more imports would only add to the inventory," said the official from the port.

According to available data, coal imports through Mundra stood at only 339,482 ton in the last two weeks of December (ended December 20 and December 27) compared to 1.21 million tons (mt) imported in the first two weeks of the month (ended December 6 and December 13). Data reveal that only three coal vessels carrying 167,155 tons, 82,727 tons and 89,600 of steam coal berthed in the port in the last two weeks.
