Coal mining in Chirmiri

Coal mines in Chirmiri area are open cast mines and the first one was opened here in 1928. In 2013 Chirmiri open cast mines were declared as Chirmiri Mega Project. A long wall coal machine has been installed here, which is the second largest of its kind in Asia. While the township of Chirmiri, having a population of over 1.5 lakh people, is a municipal corporation; it is a village as far as revenue records are concerned. Later the township was declared a tehsil by chief minister.
An Indane domestic gas cylinder depot is situated in the area that has been declared as unsafe and residents of the area have been asked to move out.
Hindustan Petroleum too had its domestic gas cylinder depot in such an area, which was shifted to an alternative place after a lot of public protest.
