Except some interest in standard South African coal, almost all types and varieties of the fuel remained soft on February 26 on continued sufficient availability and not much buying interest, market sources said.
Indian buyers were maintaining a low profile amidst liquidity issues, currency fluctuations and not-so-encouraging announcement from the Union Budget proposals for 2016-17, they said.
Meanwhile, the initial euphoria that the strike at Carrejon will affect supplies is not being accepted by buyers as they feel that there is ample availability of the material from other sources, including Russia.
Reports are coming in that Indian companies are being offered Russian cargo at much competitive CFR rates following a soft trend in freight rates.
While it was reported earlier that Columbian coal was being offered at about $50 per ton CFR India, it is heard that Russian coal of similar spec of 6000 Kcal/kg NAR is being offered at similar rates, they said.
