July 14: Low demand from Chinese companies, coupled with a cut in domestic prices of coal by some of the leading miners in the country, caused further weakness in international coal prices on July 11 in the absence of demand from other major buyers, market sources said.
However, the market expected little further downward correction in prices as South African rates are nearing $70 per ton levels and Indonesian prices are already under pressure, they said.
“Any major decline in prices will prompt miners to cut production as they are already operating under thin margins,” an official with a trading company said.
