Coal stock at power plants fell on multiple factors: Minister

July 28: A host of factors, including less wagon supply, were responsible for decline in coal stock at various power plants of the country in recent days, Coal Minister Piyush Goyal has said.

“Shortage of supplies to power plants was on account of less wagon supply against indents of coal companies particularly for plants of Western and Southern region and transportation constraints due to seizure of coal transportation trucks at the coalfields during the Lok Sabha elections,” Goyal said.

In Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), coal transportation to Kanikar siding of Basundhara area was stopped during day time for the last seven months and Siding No.3 & 4 of Talcher are disturbed and closed for despatches due to law and order problems affecting rake loading from these sidings, he said.

Wagon availability constraints in line with indents of coal companies, particularly in Korba coal field of SECL & Ib valley coal field of MCL hamper wagon loading performance of CIL, Goyal said.
