Coal stock at power units cross 31-mt; up m-o-m, y-o-y
08 Jan 2016
Coal stock levels at about 100 thermal power plants monitored by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) crossed 31 million tons (mt) as on January 6, 2016, up month-on-month (m-o-m) and year-on-year (y-o-y) that resulted in a situation wherein not a single plant is facing supercritical or critical coal stocks position.
According to the CEA report, coal stocks at 100 thermal power stations (TPS) as on January 6, 2016 stood at 31.402 million tons (mt), up 1.43% from 30.959 mt as on December 30, 2015 as well as up 14.60% from 27.401 mt as on December 6, 2015.
Coal stocks at the TPS stood at 14.428 mt on January 6, 2014.
Domestic coal stocks at the TPS as on January 6, 2016 stood at 29.434 mt, up 2.13% from 28.819 mt as on December 30, 2015 as well as up 14.47% from 25.714 mt as on December 6, 2015. Domestic coal stocks at the TPS stood at 12.505 mt on January 6, 2014.
However, imported coal stocks at the TPS as on January 6, 2016 stood at 1.968 mt, down 8.04% from 2.140 mt as on December 30, 2015.
Stocks of imported coals stood at 1.687 mt and 1.923 mt on December 6, 2015 and January 6, 2015 respectively.
A year back, the number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than seven days was 38 and the number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than four days was 17.
In terms of days, stocks of coal on January 6, 2016, December 30, 2015, December 6, 2015 and on January 6, 2015 were sufficient to run all the plants for 24, 24, 22 and 9 days respectively.
