Coal stock at power units cross 33 mt level

Coal stock levels at about 100 thermal power plants monitored by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) crossed 33 million tons (mt) as on January 20, 2016, up week-on-week (w-o-w), month-on-month (m-o-m) and year-on-year (y-o-y) basis.

Such is the situation that not even a single plant that are monitored by CEA is facing a super-critical coal stocks scenario of less than 7 days or critical coal stocks position of less than four days since the last few weeks.

According to the CEA report, coal stocks at 100 thermal power stations (TPS) stood at 33.699 million tons (mt) as on January 20, 2016, up 3.85% from 32.449 mt as on January 13 and up 12.66% from 29.911 mt as on December 20, 2015. The stock was up 120.36% compared to year ago figures of 15.293 mt as on January 20, 2015.

Domestic coal stocks at the TPS as on January 20, 2016 stood at 31.643 mt, up 3.35% from 30.618 mt as on January 13, 2016, up 14.79% from 27.567 as on December 20, 2015 as well as up 141.13% from 13.123 mt as January 20, 2015.
 

However, imported coal stocks at the TPS as on January 20, 2016 stood at 2.055 mt, up 12.23% from 1.831 mt as on January 13, 2016, but down 12.33% from 2.344 mt as on December 20, 2015 as well as down 5.30% from 2.170 mt as on January 20, 2015.

A year back, as on January 20, 2015, the number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than seven days was 28 and the number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than four days was 13.
 

In terms of days, stocks of coal on January 20, 2016, January 13, 2016, December 20, 2015 and on January 120, 2015 were sufficient to run all the plants for 25, 24, 23 and 11 days respectively.
