Coal stock at power units up w-o-w, m-o-m, y-o-y

Coal stock levels at about 100 thermal power plants monitored by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) crossed 32 million tons (mt) as on January 13, 2016, up week-on-week (w-o-w), month-on-month (m-o-m) and year-on-year (y-o-y) that resulted in a situation wherein not a single plant is facing a super-critical coal stocks scenario of less than 7 days or critical coal stocks position of less than four days.

According to the CEA report, coal stocks at 100 thermal power stations (TPS) stood at 32.449 million tons (mt) as on January 13, 2016, up 3.33% from 31.402 mt as on January 6, 2016, up 11.32% from 29.149 mt as on December 13, 2015 as well as up 112.35% from 15.281 mt as on January 13, 2015.

Domestic coal stocks at the TPS as on January 13, 2016 stood at 30.618 mt, up 4.02% from 29.434 mt as on January 6, 2016 as well as up 14.43% from 26.756 mt as on December 13, 2015. Domestic coal stocks at the TPS stood at 13.281 mt on January 13, 2015.
 

However, imported coal stocks at the TPS as on January 13, 2016 stood at 1.831 mt, down 6.96% from 1.968 mt as on January 6, 2015 as well as down 23.49% from 2.393 mt as on December 13, 2015.

Stocks of imported coals stood at 2 mt as on January 13.
 

A year back, as on January 13, 2015, the number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than seven days was 29 and the number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than four days was 15.
 

In terms of days, stocks of coal on January 13, 2016, January 6, 2016, December 13, 2015 and on January 13, 2015 were sufficient to run all the plants for 24, 24, 22 and 11 days respectively.
