Coal stocks at India’s power plants increase sharply

 December 11: Coal stock levels at about 100 thermal power plants monitored by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) rose substantially compared on a week-on- week and month-on- month basis. Also, the number of plants in critical and super critical stock positions were at zero as on December 8, 2015.

 Coal stocks at these plants rose to 28.247 million tons (mt) on December 8, 2015, resulting in a 6.01% rise from 26.645 mt on December 1, 2015 as well as up 15.10% from 24.542 mt as on November 8, 2015.

 The stocks on the above dates were, however, significantly higher compared to a low of 11.459 mt a year ago on December 8, 2014.

 No plant was identified as facing a critical coal stocks level of less than seven days as on December 8, 2015. The total number of such plants stood at 2 on December 1, 2015, 6 on November 8, 2015 and a high of 50 as on December 8, 2014.

 Similarly, no plant was identified as facing a super-critical coal stocks level of less than four days as on December 8, 2015. The total number of such plants stood at 0 on December 1, 2015, 3 on November 8, 2015 and at a high of 29 as on December 8, 2014.

 Of the total coal stocks as on December 8, 2015, imported coal inventory was at 2.192 mt and domestic coal at 26.055 mt while on December 1, 2015, imported coal inventory was at 1.580 mt and domestic coal at 25.065 mt.

 On the other hand, on November 8, 2015, imported coal inventory was at 1.432 mt and domestic coal at 23.111 mt, while on December 8, 2014, imported coal inventory was at 1.497 mt and domestic coal at 9.962 mt.
