Coal stocks at India’s power units up w-o-w, m-o-m

December 18: Coal stock levels at about 100 thermal power plants monitored by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) increased compared on a week-on-week and month-on-month basis. Also, as with December 8, 2015, the number of plants in super-critical stock positions was at zero as on December 15, 2015.

 Coal stocks at these plants rose to 29.378 million tons (mt) on December 15, 2015, resulting in a 4% rise from 28.247 mt on December 8, 2015 as well as up 17.34% from 25.037 mt as on November 15, 2015.

 The stocks on the above dates were, however, significantly higher compared to a low of 12.296 mt a year ago on December 15, 2014.

 No plant was identified as facing a super-critical coal stocks level of less than four days as on December 15, 2015. The total number of such plants stood at 0 on December 8, 2015, 4 on November 15, 2015 and at a high of 27 as on December 15, 2014.

 However two plants were identified as facing a critical coal stocks level of less than seven days as on December 15, 2015. The total number of such plants stood at zero on December 8, 2015, 8 on November 15, 2015 and a high of 43 as on December 15, 2014.

 On December 15, 2015, imported coal inventory was at 2.369 mt and domestic coal at 27.008 mt while of the total coal stocks as on December 8, 2015, imported coal inventory was at 2.192 mt and domestic coal at 26.055 mt.

 On the other hand, on November 15, 2015, imported coal inventory was at 1.497 mt and domestic coal at 23.539 mt, while on December 15, 2014, imported coal inventory was at 1.506 mt and domestic coal at 10.761 mt.
